  • About Derek

Derek Zemmin is an accredited nutritional therapist, yoga instructor and public speaker.  His goal is to educate and create awareness for wellness and nutritional health.  Derek operates an online, global nutritional therapy and well-being practice aimed at helping clients with life choices, mental & physical stress, vitamin & antioxidant deficiencies, cleansing programs, food plans, sports nutrition, healthy aging, weight loss and other lifestyle goals.  Derek’s passion is rooted in the fact that he has personally faced these issues and has made changes resulting in a dramatic lifestyle turnaround. This result has fueled Derek’s desire to help others do the same.

After graduating with a BFA in 1994 he followed a career in advertising and marketing. 1995 he was offered to build a creative department for a major automotive distributor in Detroit Michigan.  In less than a month, he had established an advertising department from the ground up, and was named art director of the TSC Design Center.  There he created a new look for the company, presenting new designs of the typical automotive sales materials and changing them into stunning graphics and conceptual marketing strategies.

After accomplishing these goals, Derek decided to start his own business.  In May 2003, he moved to Key West, Florida, and opened his own agency, KeyDesigns.  Right in the heart of Old Key West, he began a new journey into local and national marketing.  Producing brochures, business cards, magazine ads, clothing apparel, and aiding local charities, Derek established a living in south Florida.  He learned the significance of giving presentations and the importance of speaking to different businesses to meet their needs.  In the summer of 2005, five hurricanes hit south Florida destroying most of the island, crippling the tourism industry and many businesses had to close up shop.

In October of 2008, Derek decided to pursue a burning desire to explore other parts of our world, notably Australia.  After living in Western Australia for a year he than later moved to the Gold Coast and started to work for Apple Inc.  There he found a desire to speak performing various workshops, hands on training events, specialty group lectures, internal presentations on company procedures and product tutorials.  Excelling in this area he became one of the lead trainers specializing in giving presentations, educating groups and one on one training.

Along with operating an online global nutritional therapy practice, Derek also performs weekly speeches about business, work/life/balance and living a healthy lifestyle through the wonders of nutrition.  These topics many of us struggle with on a daily basis.  “Making small adjustments can create bigger changes.  It is hard when you look at the big picture or painting of our entire life and the part that hasn’t yet been painted.  Many of us panic at the void of a blank canvas or we may even look at what we did in the past and try to change it.  If we just focused on what is important now and did a little bit each day at the end of the year we would have accomplished much more than we ever thought was possible.  A masterpiece!” ~Derek Zemmin

  • Health Challenges

At the end of 2013 Derek was on a downward spiral and a number of wake up calls started to cash in on the type of lifestyle he had chosen.  Derek had hit his rock bottom, he was overweight, run down, stressed out and making horrible choices that were just quick fixes covering up a very large pile of on-going pain, which just made matters even worse.  Forming these bad habits and addictions was adding fuel to an unhealthy flame; smoking cigarettes, having a few bourbon’s every night to “take the edge off”, overeating, bad food combinations, acid reflux, heartburn but probably the worst one of all was his sleep apnea.  His wife was very concerned about his health particularly his snoring because she wasn’t getting much sleep herself.  Many nights she we would awake to him gasping for air but never actually waking up and because of her concern Derek agreed to get a sleep apnea test.  The test lasted a whole week and recorded his sleep patterns using electrodes and heart monitor.   The results were devastating showing a high risk of stroke, high blood pressure, heart failure, heart attack, depression, sever headaches.  Each day showed that he had stop breathing between 5 to 10 times in a night and many as close to 2 minutes long.

After getting the results and speaking with the technician Derek could not think of any options except to purchase a breathing machine to help him breath and sleep at night.  However, it didn’t always work because he just kept removing the mask in his sleep on account of of the discomfort.  After months of wearing the Darth Vader looking mask and the thought that this was going to be apart of his everyday life, was not something he wanted to continue.

Another wake up call was when Derek and his wife were invited on an beautiful hike with a group of people to Fraser Island in Queensland Australia.  Hiking has always been a huge passion of Derek’s and something that he has loved doing since he was a child.  The hike was about 17 kilometers (9 miles roughly) and it was going to take about 8 to 9 hours.  Easy enough for an experienced hiker however, the last 4 hours of the hike Derek felt like he was having a heart attack.  The pain in his chest was something he had never felt before, his ribs felt like they were going to crack and his back felt like someone stabbed him with a 6” blade.  He had to stop and lay down at least 6 different times just to catch his breath and try to scramble whatever energy he had left.  Overweight, completely out of shape, running on fumes and for the first time ever, he started to question how much longer he had left on this planet.  It was a massive reality check not to mention embarrassing that at his age and experience in the outdoors traveling all around the world, this was the first time he ever had to ask others for help just to get through the rest of the journey.  This and a number of other wake up calls started to happen that shook him physically and emotionally.

“The sad thing is, many of us don’t realize whats happening until it is too late or things have started to go wrong.  I physically felt horrible, I had little and sometimes no energy, I’d pass out on the train ride home from work, I had incredible back pains, leg pains, pains I didn’t even know what or where they were coming from, I was up to a 3XL t shirt, size 42” waist and things like hiking, camping, exploring, photography, traveling, enjoying the outdoors, swimming, going to the beach, living life to the fullest was being hindered by my poor health decisions; keeping me from doing the things I love.  I felt caged by my own reality; no time, exhausted, no solutions and no hope.  After a number of wake up calls and reality continually slapping me in the face, I finally had enough and broke free of the cage by making decision to change my life, my health and my nutrition.  Now for the first time ever, I’m in the best shape in my life since my teens.  I’ve lost over 17kilos (38 pounds), I’m down to a 34-32 waist, I have heaps of energy, I don’t have to wear a mask to help me breath at night and I am dedicating my life to helping others do the same.  Life is way to short to overlook the damage we are doing to our bodies and it will catch up to you sooner than later.  Many of us don’t even know what or how it is happening.  Now is the time to take a stand and take back your health.  It’s a choice that you can make right now and change not only your life but the ones closest to you because you will inspire them!” ~ Derek Zemmin

  • Yoga

Derek has been practicing yoga since June 2014 and from the very first class immediately fell in love with the practice.  “At first I was hesitant and had a lot of excuses.  Then a friend of a friend posted a few pictures with a description about what yoga had done for him physically and mentally. Seeing the progress he had made was truly inspiring and I thought to myself if he can do it so can I.  That was all I needed to get up and go try a class.  At that point I had already lost a lot of weight and was gaining energy.  I was starting to feel a pull toward some kind of fitness but I was not interested in going to a gym.  I never really cared much for the typical gym so yoga to me was something new, exciting and interesting.  My first week I couldn’t get enough, I was attending as many classes as I could.  Yoga was my doorway into getting fit and a few months later, I found myself doing something I never thought I would… I walked into a gym and signed up for a membership!”

The benefits of Yoga are outstanding: muscle strength, increased flexibility, building core strength, cardiovascular health, balance, improved circulation, prevention, metabolism and the list goes on.  For Derek is was more than just a long list of benefits, he could see and feel the difference.  “This was the first time in a long time that I could actually feel my abs since my twenties.  Yoga is truly an amazing gift you can give yourself and you can do it anywhere!  I have done yoga overseas, without a mat, at beaches, outside, inside, carpet or no carpet… anywhere there is a floor you can do yoga.  Oxygen is the number one nutrient on the planet and it is so vital for our cells.  Learning all the different techniques you become so aware of your breath and how energized you feel after is so exhilarating.  I will be doing yoga for the rest of my life and sharing this beautiful practice.”

On Derek’s 45th birthday, as a gift to himself, he applied for a intense 200 hour teacher training course in Rishikesh India for 30 days.  There he learned Hatha, Ashtanga and Vinyasa Asana’s including anatomy & physiology, meditation techniques, pranayama, history of yoga, philosophy of yoga, ayurveda, ayurvedic foods, the different dosha types, teaching methodology, alignment, yoga cleansing, yoga nidra, bandhas and mudras to name only a few.  “This was one of the best gifts I have ever given myself.  I learned more than I could have ever imagined and still today absorbing as much as I can.  The Asana’s are only a small part to a much larger scale of the practice of yoga.  I still consider myself a beginner but also know that it does not matter what level you are at in yoga, it is the continuing practice that makes it so enjoyable.”

Derek applies a lot of his yoga knowledge to his practice.  For him it has taken his own wellness to a whole different plane and added so much value for his clients.  Yoga has been around for over 5000 years and revolves around our health, wellbeing and beyond.
